The Magic of Windlier Woods by N. R. Williams

Author:  N. R. Williams lives in Colorado, in the United States.  She is married, has two grandchildren and is a long standing member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers.  Her blog can be found here: http://nrwilliams.blogspot.com

Blurb:  (From Amazon) Newert, an erbit of Windlier Woods, is concerned. The magic of his world is seeping away. He struggles to open a portal to another world, believing that this will restore the magic of Windlier Woods. Assuming the big red truck is magical he returns to his world with the truck and its driver. Thus begins Newert's misadventure. What will happen next?

Length: About 4000 words.

Genre: Fairytale, children's, fantasy

Review:  The magic of Windlier Woods is a nice, short, children's story about an erbit named Newert.  It is very much in the ilk of Enid Blyton, if your children enjoy that kind of story, they will probably enjoy this.  There is some nice imagery in the piece and I liked the idea of casting spells through song.  I'm not entirely sure what an erbit is, as it isn't explained in the story, but I presume that it is some sort of fae creature.

There are some problems grammar and sentence structure, to elaborate, there are one or two instances of present tense appearing in a largely past tense narrative.  Also, there are a few instances of sentences starting with 'And', 'Or' and 'But', however it still reads well and doesn't detract too much from the story.

It finishes a little early for my taste, I would have liked to have spent some more time with the main character and got to know more about this fantasy realm, but there seems to be plenty of opportunity for more adventures to be written about the character.

All in all, a decent read.

Star rating:  ***  - 3 stars, a child would probably enjoy this charming tale as a bed time story.

  1. Hello Ben
I'm pleased to be your first review. I'm not familiar with the author you mentioned so I'll have to check her out. I am thinking about more stories.

  2. Hi Nancy,

She's a famous British, children's writer, I think there's some sort of law where you aren't allowed a childhood here unless you have read at least one Enid Blyton book. Her most famous creations are Noddy and the Famous Five, though I don't know how famous they are outside the UK, lol.

Excellent I look forward to seeing more and will keep an eye on your blog.

    Thanks for taking a look,

    Ben.
